Review: Soul Theif

Soul Theif
Jana Oliver
Release Date: August 5, 2011
Series: The Demon Trappers

Description:
Riley Blackthorne’s adventures continue in the second spellbinding Demon Trappers novel, as she battles demons… and a love that could destroy her.

At the start of the second thrilling installment of the Demon Trappers series, 17-year-old Riley Blackthorne has about had it up to here. After the devastating battle at the Tabernacle, trappers are dead and injured, her sweet boyfriend Simon is gravely injured, and now her beloved late father’s been illegally poached from his grave by a very powerful necromancer. Add to the mix: Ori, one sizzling hot freelance demon hunter who’s made himself Riley’s unofficial body guard, and Beck, a super over-protective “friend” who acts more like a grouchy granddad, and Riley’s almost ready to leave Atlanta altogether.
But as the demon count in Atlanta increases, the already crippled Trappers Guild has its hands full, and, when the Vatican finally sends its own Demon Hunters to take care of the city’s “little” problem, pandemonium breaks loose. Only Riley knows that she might be the center of Hell’s attention: an extremely powerful Grade 5 demon is stalking her, and her luck can't last forever. As Riley’s life becomes a dangerous balancing act, will she be strong enough not to tip? And who will be there to catch her if she falls

Review:
Ok first let me start by saying the first book was good but not fabulous.  This book kept me absolutely riveted.  I didn't want to put it down.  (shhh I even just finished reading it at work that's how good it is) It was everything I wanted to first book to be and more.  We continue on with Riley's story where the #5 demon is after her, but she doesn't know why.  Her boyfriend is back but he's not the same, Beck is more worried about her than ever and now Ori the sexy stranger who says he is a freelance demon hunter.  It's crazy, fun, exciting, adventurous, drama, everything all in one.

I loved how Riley's character has grown as she comes into her own, even if she did make a huge mistake towards the end of the book, everything happes for a reason.  And I can't wait to see what that reason is in the next book.  We also get to experience a little more of Beck's feelings towards Riley's and vice versa, but that's too late.  But really I don't think it is, I have high hopes for those two.  Ori, well I can't say too much on him without it being a spoiler.  I'll keep my reservations about him to myself.  The Vatican's demon hunters are in the picture now too, we meet a few of them, and a shady reporter which I do not like for obvious reasons once you read the book.  She's bad news I just know it.  They didn't get much face time in this book but I have a feeling they might be all over the next book.  Especially since we ended with Riley being on the run - from basically everyone!

Now she owes a favor to two sides, what is she going to do?  Can they zero each other out?  What does her father have to say for himself now that he's back (reanimated still)? What will happen with Beck and Riley, or Simon, even Ori?

Have you read this if so please let me know what you think.

Obsidian
By Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: December 6, 2011
Series: Lux

Description:
Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy Internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. This feature is great because everyone loves lists, including me.

This week's Top Ten is:

Top Ten Books To Read During Halloween

1. Anna dressed in Blood - by Kendare Blake
 - because it's got ghosts, gore, love, and all that good stuff

2. Hex: A Witch and Angle Tale - by Ramona Wray
- because there's a which and an angel, whats more Halloween than witches hehe.

3. It - by Stephen King
- because it's a classic

4. Some Girls Bite - by Chloe Neill
- Just because it has vampires, fairies etc in the book.  But also because the next book in the series comes out on Tuesday :-) if you haven't read it yet you should def check out the series. Who doesn't love a good vampire book.

5. How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf - by Molly Harper
- because there are werewolves in this book - and hello they are naked! Everyone needs a little "fun" on Halloween!

I can't think of anymore at the moment.  How about you what books should you read during Halloween?

Here's my teaser for the week:
Bridget sighed.  She was so tired.  Tired of fighting with everyone.  Tired of having no one to confide in.  Hector wasn't exactly a confidant, and Peter would only get two seconds into a serious conversation about her feelings before the words "I love you" came spilling out of his mouth. Her dad had been her best friend. Now that he was gone and her mom had a revolving door of boyfriends, it was like she had no one to talk to.

Product Description:
Demon Trapper Riley Blackthorne just needs a chance to prove herself—and that’s exactly what Lucifer is counting on…

Review:
So I'm not going to lie the book felt like it took me forever to read, I don't know if it was the story or the business that is my life now but it took me longer than usual to finish this.  The story started out really slow and in the beginning I didn't like the characters that much, especially the way they talked.  But as I read on they started to grow on me.  The ending was the best part (and no not because it was the end) because of the battle that has begun and will continue throughout the entire series.  The action that I've been waiting for.  This book is about a girl named Riley who's father recently passed and she wants to follow in his footsteps in being a Demon Trapper. She stays at his grave night after night fighting the necros to keep him safe, but one night she isn't there as a fight ensues at the Guild meeting and literally all hell breaks loose. There's a little bit of a love story but it's almost a little awkward between Riley and Simon (because in my mind the real story is not between them but between her and Beck which feels like a hate hate relationship which I'm hoping will turn into something else).  So I did eventually like the book because I've started reading the second one because I want to see how this battle will continue and end.

All in all I would recommend it.  I started reading it because I saw many reviews on other book blogs and really I'm happy I did.  So if you've read it please let me know what you thought about it.

Musing Monday

MUSING MONDAYS… is a weekly event where MizB at Should be Reading will ask a book/reading-related question, and you answer with your own thoughts on the topic.

This week’s musing asks…

Do you listen to audio books? Why, or why not?

I have to honestly say that I CANNOT listen to audio books.  I've tried, believe me I've tried.  I see people on goodreads finish books so quickly because they are reading audio books, and so I was like OK let me try one out.  I put it on my ipod and tried to listen to it, first it was British accents (duh British author) but I just could NOT get into it.  It was not enjoyable at all.  I couldn't understand half the time and I felt like I was in kindergarten getting read to.  Nope definitely not for me.  I'll read to myself in my mind thank you!

What about you?

Here's my teaser for the week:

We stared at each other through the grate for a few moments. Though his stern expression didn't change, he did cock his head, as if looking at me from a new angle might help.

Finally he turned around in his seat and faced the steering wheel. Like nothing had happened? No induced fainting, no near-sex with pot-smoking boyfriend, no virtual hug? he said, "Come up in the front seat where you belong, and let's get out of here. We have work to do."

I have the great opportunity to be part of the Drink Deep Blog Tour and was fortunate enough to be able to ask author Chloe Neill several questions.  Check our the interview below and make sure to check the book when it comes out in November.
________________________________________

What inspired you to write about the Chicagoland Vampires?

There were a number of inspirations. I was interested in the idea of vampires having been in hiding for a really long
time--and what their lives would be like after being hidden for so long. I was interested in the idea of vampires living in
Houses, and I wanted to explore what happened when a geeky grad student became a warrior.

Which character came to you first when writing this series?
Merit came first, although she was a little different in the initial chapters of the book personality-wise. Ethan was always
Ethan, and as soon as I knew who he was, I knew who Merit was.

What part did you enjoy writing the most out of the previous books in the series?

The scene in SOME GIRLS BITE in which Merit threatens Morgan at the point of her sword was pretty fun!

If you belonged to one of the vampire houses which one would it be and why?

CADOGAN HOUSE FOREVER! I even have a Cadogan T-Shirt and my own House medal. :) To me, it's the most honorable of the Houses.

What books are you reading now?

Right now, I am reading a lot of nonfiction, including those about American history.

If you could write with another author and do a crossover from one series to the next as a special who would it be and what series? Why?

I actually don't think I'd want to write a crossover. I'm perfectly happy to read my favorite authors' series just the way
they are. :)

Thanks for having me today!

Musing Mondays

MUSING MONDAYS… is a weekly event where MizB at Should be Reading will ask a book/reading-related question, and you answer with your own thoughts on the topic.

This week’s musing asks…

Do you judge a book by its cover?

I have to say that I'm absolutely guilty of this.  I know they say it should be what's in the inside that counts, but if I don't like the cover or I don't find it remotely interesting than I'm probably going to delay reading it or even reading the back of the book.  We are a society that has been trained to look at the outside, and yes I'm guilty.

Do you judge a book by its cover?

Review: Lola and the Boy Next Door

Lola and the Boy Next Door
by: Stephanie Perkins
Release Date: September 29, 2011

Product Description:
Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion . . . she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit -- more sparkly, more fun, more wild -- the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.
When Cricket -- a gifted inventor -- steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.

Review:
Ok so I officially will LOVE anything written by Stephanie Perkins.  How great is it that Anna and Etienne play a great roll in this love story.  It's not often that authors tie in old characters especially great ones into the next book.  Yes this is a series of books but this was done so well that I couldn't stop gushing throughout the whole book.  Lola is the funky girl who is out there in the way she dresses but is the person who dances to their own beat if you know what I mean, throw in some gay parents and a crazy biological mother, she is the kind of person who doesn't care what other people think.  Her older boyfriend Max is the typical bad boy musician so of course they would be dating because they are both different than the norm.  In comes Cricket, great fashion sense and great guy overall - also Lola's next door neighbor that she has been in love with forever.  What a web we weave.  She starts talking and hanging out with Cricket as much as possible, but neglects to tell any of this to her boyfriend though.  But she's a good girl because she doesnt' cheat on him, but oh how Cricket and Lola want to be together so bad.  You can almost feel it in the wiar and everyone knows it.  This was a really great story I don't want to give too much of it away because really this is something you need to read.  It was just perfect.  If you have ever had a crush on the boy next door, there is hope that he too will have a crush on you.  I will most likely read this again, and possibly again just like I did with Anna and the French Kiss.  I cannot wait for the next book to come out.  Gush Gush Gush, LOVE IT!

Did you read it?  What did you think?  You have to read it!

Review: Amy & Roger's Epic Detour

Amy & Roger's Epic Detour
By Morgan Matson
Release Date: May 4, 2010

Product Description:
Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew—just in time for Amy's senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she's always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy's mother's old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she's surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road—diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards—this is the story of one girl's journey to find herself.

Review:
So I read this because I saw someones review on it and I had to check it out.  It also helps that I'm going on a road trip and can I just saw I wish I had Amy's book to take notes while I'm driving down the east coast.  Anyway on to the review.  This book was great.  Amy just recently lost her father, and her mother moved to Connecticut to get their new house situated.  Her twin brother was in rehab and Amy had to get to the east coast from California but she doesn't drive and needs to bring the car to her mother.  This is where Roger comes into play.  He's going to dry her mother's car with her to the east coast.  An adventure I would love to take.  Cross country.  So throughout the book you learn that Roger recently broke up with someone but is still not over them hence one of their detours.  They really did take the scenic route but along the way they both learned so much about each other, about how life is and how things will be all right in the end. It was a really cute love store, with a little bit of loss, and healing.  Great read and again I wish I had that travel book.

Have you read it?  What do you think?

Here's my teaser for the week:

“The one who said that you had fire. What—what did he mean?”
“Oh,” Roger said, and I noticed that he wasn’t looking at me. “I guess that must be a guy thing. It’s stupid.” He looked down at the key chain, fiddled with it.
“Was it about my hair?” I asked, sure that this was the answer and dreading it.
“What?” he asked, looking up at me. “No. Your hair’s great. It meant that he thought you were hot. And he thought that we were … together.”

Musing Monday

MUSING MONDAYS… is a weekly event where MizB at Should be Reading will ask a book/reading-related question, and you answer with your own thoughts on the topic.

This weeks question is:
What are you most excited about reading, right now? (can be a book you’re currently enjoying, or a book that’s yet to be published, etc.)

I'm really excited for the upcoming books as well as the Hunger Games movie that is coming out. I'm excited for all the continuing series books that are coming out next year such as the new Mortal Instruments, Infernal Devices and Divergent books that are coming out.  As well as a load of new books that are coming out next year.  It just seems like it's going to be a really good year and I have no idea how I'm going to read all the new books and all the old books I have waiting on my kindle.  So excited.

Review: Hades

Hades
By Alexandra Adornetto
Release Date: August 30, 2011
Series: Halo

Product Description:
Heaven Help Her.

Bethany Church is an angel sent to Earth to keep dark forces at bay. Falling in love was never part of her mission, but the bond between Beth and her mortal boyfriend, Xavier Woods, is undeniably strong. But even Xavier’s love, and the care of her archangel siblings, Gabriel and Ivy, can’t keep Beth from being tricked into a motorcycle ride that ends up in Hell. There, the demon Jake Thorn bargains for Beth’s release back to Earth. But what he asks of her will destroy her, and quite possibly, her loved ones, as well.

Review:
OK first let me start out by saying I will always give a book a chance.  Sometimes it may take me a little longer to read a book because I'm not 100% committed.  But I will always finish it.  I know there have been mixed reviews about this series and I too have had very mixed feelings about this series from the beginning.  Some parts are better than others, but like I said I always have to finish the book.  I think it's the goody goody aspect of the characters which I just don't find believable, at least not in this day and age.  But then again Angels are supposed to be beings that humans just can't understand right.  Anyway on to the book.  We find that Jake comes back and kidnaps Beth and takes her to hell where his plan is to get Bethany to be his princess in the underworld.  Of course she doesn't want to because she is in love with Xavier.  Well throughout the book she projects herself from Hades to where Xavier is and follows on their journey on finding her in hades.  They are in search of a portal and first need to go through a possessed nun and an archangel who they don't know if he wants to or doesn't want to help them.  Lucifer just wants to bring on the Apocalypse but he's not really in the book that much.  It's more about Jake's obsession with Bethany.  Again mixed reviews, some parts were better than others.

Top 5 of 2011

Another mini challenge at Princess Bookie's website; To enter complete the challenge:

Challenge: Write up a blog post telling me the top 5 books you read in 2011 that you loved! That were your favorite!

 1. The Mortal Instruments Series - I just started getting back into reading and discovered this series, I put it off for a while, what a mistake that was.  How can you not love such a raw relationship, throw in some angels, vampires, fairies, demons and wizards.  You have an amazing series, where I need to get the next book I have to know what's going on between Jace and Clary and everyone else in the series.  I still picture Jace as having dark hair, maybe it's just my preference but I love this relationship.

2,. The Hunger Games series.  First let me just say that I'm extremely happy that I have read this series all the way through and now there will be a movie made about the series.  I really hope the movie does this series justice because it really was an incredible group of books.  Katnis is such a symbol of freedom and she doesn't even know it but the relationships between her and the other members are just so interesting, it has to be hard going into a games where only one person can win, she really did triumph.
 3.  Anna and the French Kiss.  Who doesn't heart this book seriously.  Etienne, what a name! This was the cutest book I've read this year.  Very quick read (I read it twice in a row because I just had to).  Imagine getting thrown into a situation you didn't want and then finding out it's exactly what you needed.  It's very sweet.  I can't wait to read Lola and the Boy Next Door.
 4.  Duff.  This has to be one of my favorite books of all time.  There's just something about the main character that I can totally relate to.  Reminds me of Revenge of the Nerds where at the end everyone says I'm a nerd, yeah I'm a DUFF, everyone is a DUFF.  I just really related to the main character and loved how their relationship developed even though neither one of them wanted a relationship.  See good things can happen when you least expect it.
5.  The Chicago land Vampire series.  This was actually introduced to me by one of my friends.  Otherwise I would never have checked this series out, and I read all available books back to back and now I can't wait for the next one to come out because if you follow the series I know you know you can't wait to find out what happens next.  This was a really different and cool way to portray vampires also, almost like a business with the CEO being the one who turned all the rest.  Great series.

So those are my top five books (or in my case books/series) that I've read so far this year.  I know there are so many others I would like to acknowledge but these are by far the best of this year and I can't wait till next year because there are so many good books coming out.  2012 will be a good year!
