Review: Anna Dressed in Blood

Anna Dressed in Blood
By Kendare Blake
Release Date: August 30, 2011

Product Description:
Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas's life.

Review:
So this has to be my first "ghost" story that I've read. Usually it's vampires, werewolves, fairies or any other supernatural character but never a ghost story. So I start reading this book - imagine the setting it's dark, late, I'm reading a ghost story, and watching ghost hunters and paranormal adventures. Yeah I freaked out for a second at least, hehe. Especially when Cas gets taken to Anna's house by the guys from the new school in order to try and scare him away from Carmel (Mike's ex girlfriend also the leader of the group), well in comes Anna all covered in dripping blood and full of black veins with black black hair flowing everywhere (I think Grudge like) and she disembowels Mike in front of everyone. Just puts her hand in his chest and pulls his body apart. But she spares Cas, there's an instant connection there that they can't explain. Cas is a ghost hunter his job is to go around killing ghosts who are already dead and are killing people in revenge for their own deaths. His main focus is to kill Anna. But there's something about her that he just cannot bring himself to finish her. It has to be one of the best stories I've read lately. Their relationship develops and grows to the point they find an attraction to each other. Now call my cynical but I just don't see how a ghost and a human can get together, but she's solid not transparent so it works. Throughout the book Cas is trying to practice and train for eventually avenging his father's death from another ghost. But that ghost turns out to be much stronger than anyone thought as he practiced a wicked version of voodoo and actually is taking power from everyone Cas kills. Cas saved Anna, I won't give away all the details because I don't want to give the whole book away, but then she in turn saves him. And we're off to the next book .... where it seems Cas will be trying to get Anna back. Great start to a new series, can't wait to see what happens next. What's in store for Cas and Anna?

What did you think of the book, and if you haven't read it, you should pick it up right now and start reading
