Nantucket Blue
By: Leila Howland
Release Date: May 7, 2013
Description:
For Cricket Thompson, a summer like this one will change everything. A summer spent on Nantucket with her best friend, Jules Clayton, and the indomitable Clayton family. A summer when she'll make the almost unattainable Jay Logan hers. A summer to surpass all dreams.
Some of this turns out to be true. Some of it doesn't.
When Jules and her family suffer a devastating tragedy that forces the girls apart, Jules becomes a stranger whom Cricket wonders whether she ever really knew. And instead of lying on the beach working on her caramel-colored tan, Cricket is making beds and cleaning bathrooms to support herself in paradise for the summer. But it's the things Cricket hadn't counted on--most of all, falling hard for someone who should be completely off-limits--that turn her dreams into an exhilarating, bittersweet reality.
A beautiful future is within her grasp, and Cricket must find the grace to embrace it. If she does, her life could be the perfect shade of Nantucket blue.
Review:
This is a coming of age story with a lot of heart. You know when you read a book and it just overall makes you feel good about yourself and about everything in general? This was that book. I felt good after reading it, I felt good about the characters and their situations. It was just a really great read.
We meet Cricket (which is a great name by the way) and the Clayton's just as they are going through a tragedy of a loss one. Cricket and Jules are the best of friends or at least she thought she was until this tragedy happened and wanted nothing to do with Cricket. Cricket's life is not the best at home, her parents recently divorced and she feels as if her mother is not there at all for her that's why she feels as if the Clayton's are her family. But things progress as summer is abound and everyone is out for their summer vacations. Nantucket Island is where Jules will be so to be a good friend that is where Cricket will be. The job she had fell through but she found something better for her.
Through this experience and even if her friend is not being the good friend she wishes she was Cricket begins to realize little things about her life and how she can be better about herself. She makes new friends, ones that will last for a long time and in those friendship she realizes just how much she missed this companionship. She grows up a little on that Island all throughout reading about her Mother and how she used to be exciting when she was living there. '
Cricket finds love in the most unexpected place, and even though it was a shocker to me, I really enjoyed watching their relationship bloom. Goes to show you that really anything is possible. Cricket finally finds her path and the strength to stand up to her past and look forward to her future. I felt really empowered reading Cricket's journey. All the characters were very dynamic and appealing and even the setting was a lot of fun, really made me ready for the summer to be here.
I hope you get a chance to read this book because it's definitely worth the time to read this. I was addicted quite quickly to her journey.
