Review: Resisting the Rebel by Lisa Brown Roberts

Resisting the Rebel
By: Lisa Brown Roberts
Release Date: July 25, 2016

Description:
Disclaimer: This book contains a villain pretending to be a hero, a hero pretending to be a villain, a disco-dancing heroine, two overprotective sidekicks, a little bit of bad language, and a whole lot of swoony kissing.
Spirit committee leader Mandy Pennington is secretly in love with her best friend, Gus, but when he hooks up with her archenemy at a party, she decides to win him over once and for all. She just doesn’t know how. But who better to help than hot loner Caleb Torrs?
Caleb’s got his own problems, but when he sees Mandy pining over Gus at a party, he thinks she’s finally smoked the spirit stick and lost her mind. Maybe he has, too, because he just asked Mandy to be his fake girlfriend. She’ll get her loser friend’s attention, and he’ll get his stalker ex off his back. It’s a win-win.
But soon one fake date blends into the next and before he knows it, he actually wants to kiss Mandy. For real. Too bad their plan is working, and Gus is finally noticing the one girl Caleb just might be falling for…

Review:
You ever read a story that left you all happy with goosies and all giggly inside, that’s what this book did for me.  It was absolutely adorable in so many ways.  A true Entangled Crush book!! Lisa Brown Roberts did an impressive job of giving me all the feels of high school again, but the good ones.  Love this book.

We meet Mandy who is definitely a girl who seems to dance to her own beat and then there is her polar opposite the loner brooder bad boy Caleb, the two of them couldn’t be more different.  But you know what they say, opposites really do attract.  The two of them kind of put themselves in the situation where they had to pretend to be dating to get other people to notice or back away.  Now you know this is always a recipe for disaster, or not depending on who it is.  The two of them together was adorable because they got each other in ways no one else did.

I loved all the interaction between Caleb and Mandy’s Posse and bonus that they started to involve him as well.  The characters in this book were wonderful, they all had really great morals and depended on one another.  Their friendships were original and loyal.  The storyline although it’s been done in the past, it’s the story getting to that great ending that you can’t help but enjoy and this book didn’t disappoint in the least bit.  Just a lot of feels and good times with these characters.

This was an overall great read, short and sweet and so definitely swoon-worthy in many places.  The characters were magnificent, the energy between Caleb and Mandy was contagious and now I feel like going out and doing the hustle.  The cover is adorable, not what I pictured Caleb to be but still very appropriate for the book, just needed that leather jacket to complete the look.

EXCERPT

“Are you stalking me now? I’m seriously not in the mood,” she hissed as soon as I reached her table. She looked up at me through hooded eyes and, as if to make a point, took her fork and stabbed a cherry tomato with it until its juices bled all over her plastic plate.
My bottom lip twitched with amusement. “Not stalking actually, just a coincidence I saw you here.”
“So staring at me earlier wasn’t enough? You have to bother me now too?”
Yikes! This girl seemed like a grade A level bitch. Usually, I would have shot her some deuces and left her alone, but for some reason I found the whole encounter humorous.
“I saw you earlier during our cypher. You looked like you smelled a skunk or something,” I commented nonchalantly.
Blood rushed up her face, causing her cheeks to turn a soft shade of pink. Something about the sight caused my dick to twitch as if it were trying to wave hello to her. God, had it really been two months since I last got laid?
The girl sighed and rolled her eyes before dropping her gaze back down at her gross looking salad. “You know what? I don’t have the time or the patience to deal with this. Not today.”
“What do you mean?” With a smirk on my lips, I sat down on the empty chair across from her. Her eyes immediately lifted, blazing furiously.
“Did I invite you to sit down?”
“We’re having a conversation. A bit rude for me to stay standing up only to talk down at you, eh?”
“You—” She shut her eyes and took a few deep breaths, rolling her neck to the side. A horrible sounding POP soon followed, leaving me to wonder how her head was still attached to the rest of her body. After a few silent moments, which really seemed as if she were plotting my death, she spoke again. “I had a rough day. My roommate is batshit crazy and I don’t even want to go to this school to begin with. Please leave me alone so I can sulk in peace.”
I reached out and grabbed the smashed tomato from her plate, popping it into my mouth. “Funny, I don’t want to be here either. Guess we have that in common.”
“Are you always this annoying?” she snapped.
“Are you always this hospitable?” I shot back with a wink.
Placing her elbows on the table, she rested her head in her hands, rubbing at her temples. “What do you want, dude? Like I said, I’m not in the mood for this, so either speak your piece or leave. Better yet, why don’t you just leave?”
“Why did you look like you hated what you saw?”
She raised her head in surprise, taking her time to eye me from head to toe. I smirked knowingly as her eyes traveled from my biceps to my defined pecs.
She stammered. “I-I have no idea what you’re even talking about.”
Yup, she was definitely checking me out.

Review: Because I Love You By Tori Rigby

Because I Love You
By: Tori Rigby
Release Date: May 17, 2016

Description:
Eight weeks after sixteen-year-old Andie Hamilton gives her virginity to her best friend, “the stick” says she’s pregnant.

Her friends treat her like she’s carrying the plague, her classmates torture and ridicule her, and the boy she thought loved her doesn’t even care. Afraid to experience the next seven months alone, she turns to her ex-boyfriend, Neil Donaghue, a dark-haired, blue-eyed player. With him, she finds comfort and the support she desperately needs to make the hardest decision of her life: whether or not to keep the baby.

Then a tragic accident leads Andie to discover Neil’s keeping a secret that could dramatically alter their lives, and she's forced to make a choice. But after hearing her son’s heartbeat for the first time, she doesn’t know how she’ll ever be able to let go.

Review:
Wow, just wow.  This book was remarkably written with a story line that was intriguing to anyone who picks it up.  This is real and raw and I’m just emotionally drained for all the characters in the book because this was just an amazing read.  I think everyone should pick this up and see what it is to love someone so much that sometimes you just have to make colossal sacrifices for them.  I loved this book from beginning to end, unconditionally.

We meet Andie and her two best friends Heather and Carter.  Seems like they are quite the tight knit group until something drastic happens and just when she needs them the most, they bail.  It’s tough being in high school and of course even tougher when you are pregnant in high school.  It is a serious thing that happens daily in our world, but it’s all about how you deal with your current situation that shows what kind of person you really are.  Just when she thought she has no one her ex comes into play and steps up to the plate.  Neil is a pretty incredible guy.  Even through all his trials and tribulations he still puts Andie first, because he loves her.

With the loss of her two best friends she does befriend someone new, Jill, who I think is absolutely adorkable. She’s this nerdy girl who without a second question has Andie’s back until the end, that’s what you call a true friend.  She really helps Andie get through some tough situation all while being the best friend she could to Andie.  We need more people like Neil and Jill in this world, because we already have too many Heathers and Carters in the world.

There are a lot of tough circumstances discussed in this book and I don’t want to give them all away but Andie has had a lot to deal with, but I think in the end she made all the right choices for herself and those around her.  Neil also had a lot to deal with but he too proved himself to be the bigger and better person.  When you find a book that can take you on such an emotional journey such as this you can’t help but praise it from beginning to end.  The main story line in this book had to deal with teen pregnancy, again this is something that happens daily throughout the world but it’s how you handle it that makes you the best kind of person.  Dealing with anything this life changing is always difficult and I think this book approached it in a positive way.  No I’m not saying go be a teen mother, but there are options out there and you have to remember to explore them all before making a final decision.

I love the cover of this book, very eye catching because you want to know what it’s about.  You think it’s going to be a quick insta love story but when you read the description you just know deep down that it’s so much more and it really was.  This book was so much more than I expected, amazing read, amazing writing and yes, very much recommended.

Advance Praise

Review: You Before Anyone Else by Julie Cross

You Before Anyone Else

By: Julie Cross and Mark Perini
Release Date: August 2, 2016

Description:
Everything she wants. Everything he needs.

The supportive friend, the reliable daughter, the doting big-sister: Finley is used to being the glue that holds everyone together. But while her sweet demeanor makes her the perfect confidant, her wholesome look isn't landing her the high paying modeling jobs, which are what Finley needs if she is going to reopen her mother's dance studio.

Enter Eddie. He's intense and driven, not to mention the life of every party, and he completely charms Finley. The last thing she wants is another commitment to stand in the way of her dreams, but when she’s with Eddie, their chemistry takes over and she can let go of her responsibilities and just be. After all, what’s so wrong about putting herself first once and a while?

Except Eddie is hiding a secret. A big secret. And when it surfaces, he and Finley are going to have to choose between their love for each other and everything else…

Review:
This was a really intriguing story about two people from different worlds on different paths, meeting and discovering who they are or at least starting their journeys into discovering who they will become.  It was endearing and sweet.

We meet Finley who is a goody two shoes and in the modeling world that just will not work as everyone is always looking for someone with an edge.  So to get that edge she tries one night to be daring and this is when she meets Eddie.  He’s trying to lay low and go through the motions until he can figure things out in his life.  The two of them meet and even though it was only supposed to be a one night kind of thing they are drawn to each other and form a relationship.

It’s interesting watching the two of them try and figure out what they are going to do with their lives and what drives them both, very different but paths that coincide with one another.  There are times when you just want to tell them come on you can do it, but they need to figure it out on their own, but together if that makes sense.  They each only want what’s best for the other but Finley being such a good girl can’t help but always put everyone above herself.  This is the lesson she definitely learned that it’s ok to be selfish sometimes and what she becomes is beautiful.

Eddie on the other hand tries to figure things out and he is so determined throughout the whole book to do one thing and ends up finding out maybe that’s not really what he wanted to begin with but just another variation of that life.  It was great watching him grow throughout the book and take responsibilities for all his actions in the best way he knows how.  I don’t want to say too much about it but Eddie is a good guy and what he decided in the end was the best for everyone involved and that just makes him an even better person then he was in the beginning.

I loved meeting all the characters in the book, especially Fin’s family, they were all so wonderful and I couldn’t help but want to be around them as well.  Something about all that positivity in such a sad situation that makes your heart grow even more for everyone.

Overall I thought this was a great read, started out one way and went a different direction but either way it kept me interested in what was going to happen next.  Great read.  The cover really lured me in and then reading the description of the book kept me even more interested in seeing what this book was about.

Review: Falling for the Wrong Guy by Sara Hantz

Falling for the Wrong Guy
By: Sara Hantz
Release Date: October 12, 2015

Description:
Ruby Davis has a crush on her brother’s best friend. At least, he was his bestie until the big betrayal. Now Drew is off limits to everyone, especially Ruby. She can’t stand the way people treat him, or the way he feels about himself. It isn’t right. And those deep green eyes are calling to her.

Drew is scarred and damaged, and he has no business even looking at Ruby. But he can’t help himself. She’s beautiful, but he does his best to stay away. When they are assigned a school project, they become reluctant friends – even though they want so much more.

She’s torn between her feelings for Drew and loyalty to her brother. There’s no way they can ever be together...but love just might find a way.

Review:
I have always loved stories that involve sisters liking the brother’s best friend, it’s a classic story and what girl with an older brother doesn’t wish that sometimes, sometimes.  But unfortunately this book wasn’t my favorite.  I couldn’t really connect with the characters as much as I wanted to.  Don’t get me wrong the story was interesting but there is so much more that could have been done with it.  I just couldn’t connect.

We meet Ruby whose brother had a tragedy happen in his life involving his best friend and his ex-girlfriend.  But Ruby the ambassador to forgiveness couldn’t help but befriend Drew again, because after all she’s always had a major crush on him.  That’s all well and good but I’ve got to say even if you did have a crush on him loyalty is with family.  But I think her bringing him back into the fold helped everyone in the family in one way or another so it was positive, but still if that was my relative, hmm I don’t know what I would feel.

There was a lot of anger, sadness, desperation and overall patience and impatience in this book from all the characters.  It’s hard getting over tragedies, and sometimes the hardest part is finding help and letting go of things.  If not letting go at least finding a way to move on from them.  I think that’s a very positive in this book towards the end, the desire to find the help and make things right with everyone.  That was a great lesson that we should all practice, sometimes you need help and it’s ok to ask for it.

Overall the book was a quick read, it felt a little stiff, but the concept was great.  Really wanted more from this.  The cover was cute though, showing how the guy was cut off from the cover a symbolism of him hiding his scars.

They’d never work for real...

Mariely and Cabot Book 1 of 3
Mariely and Cabot Book 2 coming Winter 2017

Review:
Oh the drama of high school, I’m just so happy that I didn’t have to really experience any of it firsthand, at least nothing worthwhile to remember.  I am finally caught up with this series, and so happy that I did.  The author bought these two characters to life.  Yes they’ve been introduced previously that’s why I love this series everything is happening concurrently, how often do you see that.  Not very, that’s how much.  Any who this story is about Mariely and Cabot, the girl from the wrong side of the tracks and the rich boy.  Total Pretty in Pink type of book so if you loved that movie you will definitely love this book as much as I did.

So Mariely and Cabot both got played by their significant others, in the most public way possible so why wouldn’t they find solace in one another, after all who can understand what they are going through better than the one other.  I love this concept, and it just never gets boring.  The two characters are so different from one another but being together they make it work.  Even though this started out as a fauxmance, it definitely grew into something “awesome”.  Seeing the two of them debating back and forth on whether they should open themselves up was interesting to watch and a very hard decision for them to make.

I loved getting glimpses into all the old and new characters as well, it’s just fun when everyone can be around.  It’s almost like reading a soap opera, you know things are happening in the background and it’s when they come into view that you can’t help but fall in love with them all over again as well.  I love the descriptive way you could visualize Mariely’s rockabilly style, if I only I had enough confidence to pull that off.

There were also some real life situations going on in this book too.  Being a teenager is hard to begin with add to that family issues and you just can’t help but feel for the characters even more.  Cabot also had some issues to deal with in regards to his current family situation and I think that Shellee Roberts did a great job of visualizing the dynamic relationship between Cabot in his father, I hope it gets better in the long run but we shall see.  Mariely’s home life has its ups and downs as well, and it is definitely not something she is proud of or likes sharing with the world, so when she does share this information with Cabot even if it was at one point involuntarily I think it helps her move on with their relationship into a better place.

The situations are real in this book, and can completely happen and probably happen every day.  I loved the way the author told their story in alternating point of views, that helps to eliminate the old age question of what is the other person really thinking or feeling.  I think those are definitely my favorite type of books. This was another great edition to the series and I can’t wait to read more about each and every character.  Overall I really enjoyed this quick read and addition to a great series.  The cover is completely adorable and I can picture the main characters just like that, that’s always a plus with covers to make sure they correlate to the story.  I would pick this up anytime and ask anyone else to enjoy it as well.  So go read!

Review: How to Keep Rolling After a Fall by Karole Cozzo

How to Keep Rolling After a Fall
By: Karole Cozzo
Release Date: August 2, 2016

Description:
After a cyber bullying incident turns her life upside down, a handsome wheelchair rugby player shows a former mean girl that everyone deserves a second chance.

The party was at her house. The photos were posted to her Facebook account. That's all the evidence anyone needed to condemn Nikki Baylor for a cyberbullying incident that humiliated a classmate and nearly resulted in the girl's suicide. Now Nikki's been expelled from her old school, her friends have abandoned her, and even her own parents can't look her in the eye. With her plans for the future all but destroyed, Nikki resigns herself to being the girl everyone hates - almost as much as she hates herself. But then Nikki meets Pax, a spirited wheelchair rugby player who knows what it's like when one mistake completely shatters your life. Refusing to judge her because of her past, he shows her that everyone deserves a second chance... and everyone deserves to be loved.

Review:
This book bought out so many emotions in me, I felt everything in this book from beginning to end.  There are some things that are hard in life to deal with and then there are those that help you get through them, those ties are sacred as they will last a lifetime.  I haven’t read anything by this author but now I know I will pick up everything she has written because Karole Cozze did an amazing job telling this story of Nikki and Pax.

We meet Nikki as she is starting a new school after a cyberbullying incident that happened at her old school, let’s just say she was the one who took the fall for it.  I will let you judge her on your own though and I will keep my own reservations about the whole situation because sometimes there is more to the story than just the black and white of the situation.  No I don’t condone bullying of any type but peer pressure is something kids are faced with on a daily basis, it’s how you handle that and how you come out of it that makes you the person you will be.  High school is a hard time for many people but it helps to make us the adults we are today.  Sorry got ahead of myself there. Back to the book.

The two characters couldn’t be more different from one another but their current location and situations have put them in the same place and has helped each one grow in different ways.  I really enjoyed Pax’s enthusiasm and positivity but no one can hold up that faƧade forever, sometimes you too have to break down.  I think I cried throughout this book so much because I really delve into each persona so much.  It really was a very touching book.  Their situations were hard, everyone goes through something and it always seems like the biggest thing in their own eyes.  It’s tough.

I loved how there were many situations in this book to deal with, you had trust issues with friends, with parents and even yourself.  I loved reading about the dynamic of Nikki and her family and how they are ultimately trying to get through things.  It was an especially endearing relationship between her and her father.  There were many elements to this book though.  Dealing with any kind of disability is never simple, bringing someone into the fold is even harder for some people, but it’s the letting in that is the hardest and the most beautiful thing to watch.

I can keep praising this book but really you should read it.  It was a quick read, very emotional and it’s a greatly book.  It’s not based on real life but things happen and they can happen in reality, not everyone is the same, nor does everyone feel the same way about things but this book will make you feel something, it’s up to you how to take it.  I on one hand absolutely loved the book, couldn’t put it down and would read it again and any book written by Karole Cozzo.  The cover is also very eye catching and really reflects what is written.  Loved it all!

The AEDs? Preeya swallowed hard and nearly choked on the dryness in her throat. Please don’t need the defib pads for this boy. This child.
Ben’s hand met hers, as if sensing her terror. “Probably won’t need ’em; it’s just in case. Second epi shot, please.”
While he checked the boy’s carotid again, she placed the injector in his free hand.
“Pulse and breathing are slowing.” He held the shot up to his face and checked the injector’s dosage. “Another point-three milligrams…here we go.” He slammed it hard into the boy’s other thigh.
They both stared at the child. At his eyes and face, his throat, his chest…which had ceased any and all movement. The boy’s breath had stopped.
“Okay, buddy, let’s do this.” Ben glanced at his watch to note the time again, then rose up on his knees and began CPR.
“The pads, now?” Preeya asked from the floor while holding Ben’s waist to balance him through a rough patch of turbulence.
Between counts, “No, not yet.”
Ben finished two swift breaths into the boy’s mouth, now purple lips. Still nothing. “Yes—two, three, four—the pads.” Breath, breath. “But, Jesus, a defibrillator on this age heart…”
Shit, was Ben getting concerned?
“I’m going to grab the AEDs myself—Leena’s taking too long.” She spun toward first class to go, but Ben grabbed her wrist before she took a step.
Ben couldn’t say a word to follow up his touch before she heard it. A gasp.
A gasp from heaven, that’s what met her ears.
The boy jolted, his torso suddenly perpendicular to his legs, clutching his neck in his hands, air flooding into his shocked and oxygen-deprived body. The lanky and frail twelve-year-old body, now sitting up with life. Alive, thank God.
His mother came running up the aisle toward them and knelt at her boy’s feet. Ben slid behind the boy at the window end of the row and let the child rest on Ben’s chest while the child continued to oxygenate.
Preeya’s heart racked her rib cage and, officially dizzy from adrenaline and pure fear, she let her body slide to the floor then surrender back onto her calves. She swallowed back the emotion, held it at the brink. Oh God, that mother’s terror. Dear Jesus, the weight of the mere thought of losing a child made her never, ever want kids. Thoughts of losing Prana, her baby sister, swept in but Preeya blew them out again with a violent gust as quick as they’d come. No, not ever.
Leena was there the next second, heaving with relief. “Oh God, thank you.”
“Landing…?” Ben asked of Leena.
“Boise. Seven minutes out.”
“With this type of allergic event, we don’t know if there will be another episode. Have an ambulance standing by. And two more injections at the ready.”
Preeya got up from the floor. “The kit in the front has two more. I’ll get ’em. And waters…” The boy’s mother brought one back for her son as Preeya had instructed. “I’ll bring back a few more bottles.”
“Yes. Please,” Ben said, his head leaning against the hard window shade, the boy still panting, eyes closed, weak, wilted against Ben’s sweat-drenched and heaving chest.
Preeya started down the aisle, but looked back over her shoulder.
At Dr. Ben Trainer.
How’d he do it? Moment by moment, breath by breath, he’d pushed life back into the lifeless. He literally breathed a second chance into that near-dead boy, that hardly-lived-yet son of that mother, that gasping-and-grasping child, the brother to that wailing little girl. To keep it down, all of the erupting near-death and too-close, Preeya bit her bottom lip. Hard. So hard it might’ve drawn blood—she didn’t know or care. But the sharp pain did its job. No tears. Breathe, and no tears.

It had been just way too much life and death. Perhaps she’d stumbled upon yet another subconscious reason for having dropped out of medical school. Life and death. Not for her.

After two decades of working in the rigid—and sometimes blurry—world of finance, she's taken hold of her truest dream, writing hot and heartfelt stories full time.

When not chained-by-choice to her MacBook, she is embarking on outdoor adventures with her husband and little girl, laughing to tears with a good rom com, eating amazing Indian food with something chocolate for dessert; reading good, hot scorchers in bed; biking, long walks, and yoga; zoning out to killer music from across the decades and the globe; and getting lost only to discover a new exciting route home again. Series: Creative HeArts #4

Hiding in plain sight is harder than it looks…

Dahlia Greene—aka international pop superstar Cherry—is undercover as a normal high school student. She just wants to experience what real life is like, so when she overhears hottie Keegan Matthews nervously talking about liking a girl, she sees the perfect opportunity to live a real life and play a little matchmaker. What was not part of the plan was falling for a guy she can never tell the truth.

Keegan Matthews has been secretly crushing on Dahlia ever since she started at his school. Sure, Dahlia thinks he’s crushing on some other girl—not realizing his Dream Girl is actually her—but he figures, play along with her tips to woo someone else, let her get to know him, and then make his move. But with so many secrets in the mix, their romance is doomed from the start…

Review:
I’ve read the majority of this series and what I enjoyed most was that the books aren’t really consecutive.  I’ve noticed that the some of the books are happening concurrently and I think that is brilliant.  Everyone always has a story and what a wonderful way to keep the stories of this group of friends together than by bringing out concurrent books in one series.  SO I’m a little lost because I missed the last one but that will be remedied soon.  In the meantime let’s talk about Dahlia and Keegan because these two are swoon worthy in their own right.

Tracy Deebs did an amazing job bringing these two together, even though their meeting wasn’t that long and the time period from beginning to end wasn’t that long it felt longer.  They felt like they actually fit in each other’s lives perfectly.  It didn’t feel insta even if it might have been.  There is a deep connection the two of them have on different levels and I loved reading about them and their journey.

There is a lot going on in both of theirs lives separately but when they come together they help one another cope with the things they are going through.  I know that my heart went out to Keegan for being such a great guy in a rally tough situation, I will say that I really loved when he stood up for himself in the end but you will have to read the book to find out what I’m talking about.  Dahlia in her own right is going through a lot of life changes as well, not the same as Keegan but definitely as important.  These things will change her for the rest of her life.  Changes, it’s a part of life and sometimes it’s hard and sometimes it’s good.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end, and even though it’s a short book I was definitely left wanting more because I just need to know what’s going to happen next.  I know that not everyone can possibly get there happy endings and sometimes you have to go through life’s tragedies to get to a good place so I’m definitely looking forward to the next book, and can I just say how excited I was to find out there was even a next book because if not that would have been a tragedy in itself.

Overall this was a great quick read that will leave you wanting more and get you interested in this series and the other characters that are involved.  I think the cover is super cute and is very Entangled Crush type and I love it because this is such a cute adorable cover as they always are, never a disappointment.  Go read this, great for a quick summer read on the beach.

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Tracy Deebs collects books, English degrees and lipsticks and has been known to forget where — and sometimes who — she is when immersed in a great novel. At six she wrote her first short story — something with a rainbow and a prince — and at seven she forayed into the wonderful world of girls lit with her first Judy Blume novel. By ten she’d read everything in the young adult and classics sections of her local bookstore, so in desperation her mom started her on romance novels. And from the first page of the first book, Tracy knew she’d found her life-long love. Now an English professor at her local community college, she writes young adult novels that run the gamut from dark mermaids to cyberArmegeddon stories and sexy contemporaries to superheroes.
