Review: The Truth about Jack by Jody Gehrman

The Truth about Jack
By: Jody Gehrman
Release Date: April 15, 2015

Description:
Dakota McCloud has just been accepted into a prestigious art school. Soon she'll leave behind the artists' colony where she grew up―hippie dad, tofu since birth, yurt―and join her boyfriend and best friend on the East Coast. It was the plan…until Dakota finds out her boyfriend and best friend hooked up behind her back.

Hurt and viciously betrayed, Dakota pours out her heart on a piece of paper, places it in a bottle, and hurls it into the ocean. But it doesn't quite go where she expects…

Jack Sauvage finds the bottle washed up on the shore and responds to Dakota's letter. Except what if his straight-laced life doesn’t jive with the free-spirited girl he’s only seen from afar? As Jack creates a persona he believes she’ll love, they slowly fall for each other with each new letter. Now Jack is trying to find a way to make this delicate, on-paper romance happen in real life…without revealing his deception.

Review:
This was a cute quick fun read about two people who couldn't be more different but are exactly the same about their views on life and the future.  Jody Gehrman did a great job showing the different characters and insecurities they both shared.  Trust plays a major role in this book, without trust what could you possibly have left?

We meet Dakota who just basically got dumped by her boyfriend and best friend who happened to hook up, she's got second thoughts about going to the college of her choice because of their choices, right now her life is at a crossroads and with her confusion she decides to throw caution to the wind or more like into the ocean by writing a letter about her feelings hoping someone will reach out to her.

Someone definitely reaches out for her, but it's not what she expected.  All I can say when I saw the name Alejandro I literally out loud said, oh no this is going to end badly, ha ha.  Sometimes guys are just as insecure as girls, maybe even more (I said sometimes okay). Jack is definitely one of those people as he's been sheltered the majority of his life and he doesn't really know how to handle social situations as well as he should.  But seeing Dakota and having those feelings arise for her, he knew he had to meet her and get to know her better.

This book is their adventure in getting to know one another and learning that there are good people out there, you just have to let yourself find it.  Overall their relationship was cute, and sweet especially since they both are artists in their own right and felt the same way about the future.  Together they can conquer anything, but they have to be together for that.

There are some interesting secondary characters, they don't get as much play but still characters such as Attila the Romanian driver slash matchmaker seems like a really great friend to Jack when he needs one the most.  And of course his new cocky friend Joaquin, who is about his age and he probably should have been friends with sooner and then maybe all of this wouldn't have happened because he would have shared his cockiness with him.

The scenery was definitely fascinating being in an artist community where you live in different types of buildings, made me go research what they were and what they looked like.  I love when books make me go look for more information to further my knowledge on general things like this.  Any who, the book was a great quick read that kept me intrigued because I just had to find out how this was going to end, and I think it did a good job of ending the story on a really positive note.
