Review: Kissing Ted Callahan (and Other Guys) by Amy Spalding

Kissing Ted Callahan (and Other Guys)
By Amy Spalding
Release Date: April 7, 2015

Description:
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist meets Easy A in this hilariously realistic story of sneaking out, making out, and playing in a band.

After catching their bandmates in a compromising position, sixteen-year-old Los Angelenos Riley and Reid become painfully aware of the romance missing from their own lives. And so a pact is formed: they'll both try to make something happen with their respective crushes and document the experiences in a shared notebook.

While Reid struggles with the moral dilemma of adopting a dog to win over someone's heart, Riley tries to make progress with Ted Callahan, who she's been obsessed with forever-His floppy hair! His undeniable intelligence! But suddenly cute guys are popping up everywhere. How did she never notice them before?! With their love lives going from 0 to 60 in the blink of an eye, Riley and Reid realize the results of their pact may be more than they bargained for.

Review:
This book was actually quite adorable in different ways, the quirkiness, weirdness and realness of that awkward stage in your life where you are so unsure of things but want things to work out the way you want them to.  It was a really cute coming of age story that really had me hooked with these weird rock band high school kids.  Sometimes life is really hard at that age and parents need to remember that, just a side note of my opinion.

We meet Riley and Reid who are in a band and tired of being lonely and want to find love for one another, but not with one another so they devise this plan to write everything down to help each other.  OF course you can imagine when you write things down things get disastrous in the end, but somehow honesty brings everything to light and works itself out.  Sort of.  Riley has a huge crush on this one guy, and even though there are other guys throughout her adventures there is still the one main person she has her eye on, Ted.  At first I wasn’t feeling Ted but as time passed I saw he was just as nervous as she was to pull something off together.  Again it was super adorable to see these awkward teenagers find each other.

There were some really great scenes between friends and new friends that I definitely think were worth reading.  Everything had a purpose in this book and even though we really didn’t focus on Reid as much, it was still nice to see his adventures through his journal entries into their infamous book.  Sometimes it is just as hard for a guy to go up to a girl, sometimes you can’t always be That Guy.

I had a really good time reading this book and about halfway through I was a marathon reader trying to get through to the end to see what was going to happen.  It just flowed that smoothly that I read it that quickly because it kept me entertained the whole way through.  I think it could have focused a little more on the friendship between Lucy and Riley, but it touched on it which was important enough.  You just can’t let boys get in the middle of friendships, because they will come and go but friends are forever especially if they’ve been friends for such a long time.

Overall I really enjoyed the book and hope you do too.  It flowed smoothly and was entertaining from beginning to end because you just never knew what to expect next between everyone.  Although I will say I do personally think things progressed between Riley and Ted a little too quickly sometimes it just happens that way.  Things happen, it’s how you deal with them that matter and also I remember what it was like to be a teenager, good times.

Review: Between Now & Never by Laura Johnston

Between Now & Never
By: Laura Johnston
Release Date: March 31, 2015

Description:
Buh boom, buh boom.

My heart thrusts with a force that takes me by surprise. Telling me something I don’t understand. A splitting pain, a longing to slip back under. They tell me I was in a hit-and-run, but I can’t remember what happened that night. All I know is that I woke up with pictures in my pocket, a card from one of those photo booths in the mall. And I’m in the pictures. Cody Rush. Me and…

Julianna.

Her brother was there that night, and my dad, the FBI agent, was the one who put her mom behind bars. What’s the connection? And why won’t Julianna talk to me now? Somehow, she holds the key to it all, and getting close–real close—to her for the answers I need will be no hardship at all…

Review:
This book had me from the prologue, in the photo booth.  I love photo booths, and their one minute experience hooked me in completely.  I couldn’t put the book down at all because I was engrossed in what was happening.  Laura Johnston did a really great job with this book and I’m definitely intrigued about any other books she might have now because of this.

We meet Cody first, he just moved to a new location and is trying to make friends with the other basketball players, but he definitely picked the wrong one, Vic.  Vic is Julianna’s brother and he’s trouble with a capital T, of course Cody doesn’t know this until it’s too late.  The way they officially meet, Cody and Julianna, is super adorable with the photo booth and the chocolates, but the circumstances on Cody’s side is quite an adventure he didn’t want to have.  Running from something bad and then getting into an accident that makes him lose his memory and the fun begins.

Cody is desperate to find out what really happened to him the day he broke his leg and he feels as if Julianna is the key. She is definitely spunky and tries to lay low from everyone, dealing with her family is not the easiest thing as you’ll see reading throughout the book.  But Cody has dimples that you just can’t turn away.  I can only image, sigh.  Anyway so he devises a plan to get to know her better to see if he can figure out exactly what happened to him.  Of course this definitely takes time, and the more time they spend together the more they feel for one another.  It’s all very sweet, their relationship.  You just want to push them together like a magnet.

Cody’s memory comes back in bits in pieces along with old memories he thought he long suppressed about his brother.  So sad, this brother’s story but things happen that are out of your control.  It’s hard losing anyone.  The loss of people in both their lives Cody and Julianna definitely affect the way they are living their lives as well as what they plan to do for the future.  This story was just totally fabulous, I know that sounds stupid and childish but I really enjoyed this book so much that I really couldn’t put it down and read it that quickly.  I think this is something you should pick up as it has a little love, friendship, mean girls, death, police drama, friend drama and just a little bit of everything to keep you hooked from beginning to end.

I think the cover is also adorable and I can completely picture the main characters as the two on the cover, sometimes that’s hard but they described them so much in the book that it’s a good depiction of them that too is rare.  Can’t wait to read another book by this author and you should definitely pick this up as soon as it comes out!  Great easy quick read with a lot of attention grabbing scenes.

Review: Finding Mr. Brightside

Finding Mr. Brightside
By: Jay Clark
Release Date: March 23, 2015

Description:
Abram and Juliette know each other. They’ve lived down the street from each other their whole lives. But they don’t really know each other—at least, not until Juliette’s mom and Abram’s dad have a torrid affair that culminates in a deadly car crash. Sharing the same subdivision is uncomfortable, to say the least. They don’t speak.

Fast-forward to the neighborhood pharmacy, a year later. Abram decides to say hello. Then he decides to invite Juliette to Taco Bell.

To her surprise as well as his, she agrees. And the real love story begins.

Review:
This book was definitely a unique book, and a very unusual love story between two people who may not have gotten together if it wasn’t for their circumstances.  But perhaps everything happens for a reason and it was actually meant to be, it doesn’t state this in the book but that’s what I’m going with right now.

We meet Abram and Juliette, both in the pharmacy waiting for their medication, the way they deal with life after the death of their parents.  The very parents who were having an affair with one another and the very parents who were killed in a car accident.  Now you might think it’s weird that they start hanging out after all their parents pretty much changed all the lives around them, but there is something about their weirdness and awkwardness that works together.  Seeing their relationship grow from one in passing to friendship and eventually to depending on one another and falling in love was actually a beautiful thing to watch.

I can completely imagine the two characters in their “Prescription for Love” story.  It unquestionably has a good beginning to build on and throughout the book you believe these two people can actually be someone’s reality.  It was fascinating to watch Juliette finally accept what has happened with her mother, because when you are on medication you don’t really feel what you need to feel.  I was gripped from the very beginning and couldn’t put it down until the very end.  Even at the end I almost wanted more.  Yes there is a definitive ending but even still I wanted more from these two because they were so different.

Overall this was a good read.  It may not be what you expect, it’s not a torrid love affair but it is a love affair none the less, between two people who are coping with their lives in different but similar ways.  I enjoyed it thoroughly from beginning to end and I believe you will too. I really like the book cover but I wouldn’t have minded seeing them at the CVS or just a plain pharmacy kind of sneaking up on one another like they do in the book so obviously watching one another for a while and both knowing it.

Review: #16thingsithoughtweretrue by Janet Gurtler

#16thingsithoughtweretrue
By: Janet Gurtler
Release Date: March 28, 2014

Description:
Heart attacks happen to other people #thingsIthoughtweretrue

When Morgan's mom gets sick, it's hard not to panic. Without her mother, she would have no one—until she finds out the dad who walked out on her as a baby isn't as far away as she thought...

Adam is a stuck-up, uptight jerk #thingsIthoughtweretrue

Now that they have a summer job together, Morgan's getting to know the real Adam, and he's actually pretty sweet...in a nerdy-hot kind of way. He even offers to go with her to find her dad. Road trip, anyone?

5000 Twitter followers are all the friends I need #thingsIthoughtweretrue

With Adam in the back seat, a hyper chatterbox named Amy behind the wheel, and plenty of Cheetos to fuel their trip, Morgan feels ready for anything. She's not expecting a flat tire, a missed ferry, a fake girlfriend...and that these two people she barely knew before the summer started will become the people she can't imagine living without.

Review:
Ah the world of Twitter, sometimes it’s easier to make friends on there than it is to have friends in real life because you don’t really have to deal with reality, you can be whoever you want to be.  I think Janet Gurtler did a great job of showing how much the main character really does need to get a grip on her reality and life her life to the fullest.  After all life is short.

We meet Morgan who after a very embarrassing video of her dancing was posted all over the place has the only main goal of reaching 5000 followers on Twitter, but that’s now what life is all about and she learns this quickly when so many things happen to her in a rather short period.  While working during the summer at a local theme park she befriends two people that she wouldn’t have otherwise thought to befriend, Adam the manager and Amy a fellow clerk in the park.  But it’s these friendship that she forms that help her get through the next couple episodes in her life.

First we have a unique mother who neglects to tell Morgan who her real father is until she believes she’s about to die, which she doesn’t, but now Morgan is on a mission to find her real father.  There are certain things she believes, and when she comes face to face with him those realities are shattered and new ones are formed.  It was all very fascinating watching their reunion happen the way it did.  Again she couldn’t have gotten through any of that without the help of her true friends, her real friends, not her twitter friends.

There were some really great moments in the book that pulled at your heart strings and made you think about what you are doing with your life and hoping that you remember to live it to the fullest.  Don’t leave important things for tomorrow because it may never come.  I loved the character of Amy, she bought life to the book with her optimistic outlook on life and her very much direct way of talking but in a good way, sometimes it’s ok to not have a filter.  Without a filter that’s how you learn the truth about things and people around you.

Overall I liked this book, it kept me entertained from beginning to end and would recommend this book or anything by this author to everyone.  I think the cover is cute, and appropriate for this book.  I hope you all remember to live in reality and not virtual reality.

Review: Worth the Wait by Jamie Beck

Worth the Wait
By: Jamie Beck
Release Date: March 17, 2015

Description:
Thirteen years ago, Vivi LeBrun was sketching a rooster and eating Oreos when she first met—and fell for—her friend’s brother, David St. James. Since then, her love for David has only intensified thanks to years of friendship with his family, who rescued her from a lonely, tumultuous childhood. As she travels to Block Island to vacation with the St. James siblings, Vivi daydreams about reuniting with David, hoping he’ll finally see her as his soul mate.

After his mother’s death, David distanced himself from his siblings, determined to hide a devastating family secret. Now, he’s brought a new girlfriend along to his homecoming—one who’s pushing for a serious commitment. The last thing he needs on his growing list of problems is his budding attraction to Vivi.

With tensions running high, David’s behavior triggers a series of events that might cost him the love he’s always taken for granted and Vivi the only real family she’s ever known.

Review:
This was definitely worth the wait, on so many levels.  This book just gives you hope that there is still love out there and sometimes you just have to step back and look, because most likely it’s already there and you just don’t realize it.  I’ve always loved the books where you are in love with your brother’s best friend.  They bring you more hope because you know they have been around one another for a longer period of time, and they have seen you at your best and your worst.

This book had a little bit of everything for me in regards to a contemporary romance.  The characters were just fabulous, relatable and so convincing.  There was no insta love, there was a love that grew over the years, and an understanding between two people that super passed friendship and even love at times because that’s how well they knew one another.   These two characters David and Vivi knew each other so well.  From the very beginning of the book when they meet and she’s only 13 and he’s 18, she was quirky and he was sweet to her, from that very moment I knew this was going to be an amazing book and I was not disappointed for a single moment.

Vivi has loved David from their first meeting, and even though he doesn’t say it, a woman knows by the way he acted and has acted throughout the book that he too loves her, he’s just too dumb to realize it.  Isn’t that just the case though sometimes?  Men aren’t the brightest even if they think they are most of the time.  There were some really great moments of epiphanies for David in this book and I enjoyed every single one.  The dynamic between all the siblings and characters were great, I really felt invested in all of them.  Even Laney, who by the end I just felt bad for because she thought she had something good.  But nothing is as powerful as that love that lasts a lifetime.

The setting in this book was great too because not only do you have the hustle and bustle of the city but you also have the peacefulness of the Island.  Which let me tell you made me go research this island because that’s how much I want to go there now.  Overall this book was great from beginning to end.  It had great characters, a really wonderful story, and depth to it.  Every time something was heartbreaking my heart felt it.  Those butterflies fluttered and there is nothing more special than getting lost in a book and feeling every moment that you are reading.  Jamie Beck did an amazing job and I can’t wait to read another one of her books.

Excerpt

I turn around, and my eyes zero in on the door. My heart starts hammering in my chest because Scott is standing there looking absolutely incredible in a crisp, white shirt and tight, black pants.

"Oh my God, he came alone,” I mumble, hardly believing it to be true as my heart skips a beat. I thought for sure he’d want to show me up by draping some rail-thin model on his arm. “Damn it. Why does he always have to look so amazing?”

"'Cause he's Scott Harper,” Grey chuckles.

Chase is waving Grey over, and she gives me a wry grin.

“Poor Jake never stood a chance, did he?" She gives my hand a quick squeeze before moving through the crowd to join her husband.

I turn my back to the revelry and face the wall, trying to collect myself. This is going to suck so bad. Yeah, I accepted Jake’s offer just to piss Scott off because I'd thought he’d bring one of his past flames in a surefire tit-for-tat move, but he didn’t. Now, I feel like an idiot. I thought Scott didn’t want to be seen with me in front of his teammates because I don’t quite measure up to the standard he’s used to. But this is a couple’s party, and he flouted the rules and came here stag, willing to be the odd man out, just because of me.

He'd asked me to go with him and I'd said no, but he hadn’t asked anyone else either. He'd been serious. He hadn't just offered me some secondhand invitation because his friend had beat him to it. He really wanted to go with me, and I messed it all up by coming with Jake.

Damn it.

I feel myself start to shake, but then a familiar hand grazes the exposed skin on my back, making me shiver.

"Hey, Care Bear.”

I glance over my shoulder, and Scott’s face is so close that I can almost taste the velvety softness of his lips. I’m lost in the moment as I find myself turning into his strong, hard frame, loving how his hand never leaves my body. Instead, his fingers skim the curve of my waist, following my every movement. His gray eyes are stormy with desire when we finally come face to face. He wasted no time in coming over to me, and my heart flutters at the thought. He’s sending a clear message: He’s here because of me, and he doesn’t care who knows it.

About Collette

Collette West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had seats behind the dugout for a sold-out, highly-anticipated match-up between two of baseball's biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word were instilled in Collette's impressionable brain from a young age. No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance = a little slice of heaven.

Splitting her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette indulges her inner fangirl by going to as many games as she can from hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in existence onto her iPad. When she's not clicking away on her laptop, she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr. Right. But above all, she loves dishing with her readers. Email her at collette_west@yahoo.com.

She is the author of NIGHT GAMES, GAME CHANGER and GAME ON.

Blog Tour: Love on the Menu by Ellen March - Review/Giveaway

Love on the Menu
By: Ellen March
Release Date: February 14, 2015

Description:
Jago Tanner is a loner. He works up a good hunger at his outdoors pursuits centre in Wales and looks upon each female conquest as just another meal. When he’s sated, he doesn’t go back for dessert. Until Riley shows up. A Londoner hired through an agency to assist him with activities, she isn’t at all what he asked for. For starters, with the name Riley, he expected a man. But Riley is all woman—the sexiest woman Jago has ever laid eyes on. Unfortunately she dresses like a trollop and curses like a sailor. Though ignorant about most outdoors pursuits, she’s a skilled horsewoman, able to calm even his nerviest stallion. And her lively and generous nature enchants his housekeeper Emily and his ancient friend, Tom.

In short, Jago’s new employee is a bundle of contradictions. Which is why, when Jago falls for her, he doesn’t trust his feelings. Riley seems unusually accident prone, and when her brother’s shady friends menace her, she plays the innocent. But how can anyone so self-sufficient and mouthy also be so trusting and naïve? And can a man with Jago’s volatile nature endure the jealousy a woman like Riley provokes just by strolling down the street?

Review:
I haven’t read a romance book in a while, so I couldn’t help but join this great blog tour for Love on the Menu.  Ellen March did a great job introducing us to her great characters and bringing on the romance.

We meet Riley who is an enigma on herself, she’s quite different and unique, a little crass in Jago’s eyes but still so very real.  Some of the things about her are very rare and almost unbelievable but her naivetés about her makes it just that much more believable.  You’ll have to read the book to see what I’m talking about, but she’s a fun character overall.  Jago on the other hand is a playboy who doesn’t want any emotions attached to anything, that is until he meets Riley and that just flies out the door.

Their romance is slow at first because of a misunderstanding, but when things get heated up they really stay that way.  The two of them couldn’t be more different but still they fit each other perfectly.  There are some sweet sentimental moments in the book, especially with the housekeeper (she just wants what is best for the both of them).  There are also some devious issues with a coworker that you just can’t help but want to slap her for her stupidness, jealousy is not a pretty color.  But it will eventually getting straightened out, the way it should be.

There are other moments in the book which bring some action and brings to light what each other really feel for one another.  In any romance you need just the hint of action to make it even more exciting than it already is and Ellen March definitely brought that element in.  Shady characters are a must.

Overall the book was good, a quick read that kept you reading from beginning to end.  The romance was good and the plot was good.  It did go a little fast pace for me when they finally did get together, like there should have been just a little more than a drunken night considering all the circumstances.  But I enjoyed the book none the less.  The cover is great too, definitely how I pictured Jago and his stubbornness, although I don’t know why I felt like Riley was a blond, maybe that’s just in my head.

About the Author:
Ellen March and her husband live on top of a mountain in Wales, which is ideal in the summer but not so much in the winter months or when it rains. She has three grown children, one suicidal cat--it really does have nine lives--and three Alaskan Malamutes. One of her hobbies is showing and working them. Ellen's first love, however, is reading and writing. Since childhood, she has devoured every romance and fantasy she can get her hands on and enjoys acting out her own fantasies in print. Review: Most Likely to Succeed by Jennifer Echols

Most Likely to Succeed
By: Jennifer Echols
Release Date: August 4, 2015
Series: Superlatives #3

Description:
In this sexy conclusion to The Superlatives trilogy from Endless Summer author Jennifer Echols, Sawyer and Kaye might just be perfect for each other—if only they could admit it.

As vice president of Student Council, Kaye knows the importance of keeping order. Not only in school, but in her personal life. Which is why she and her boyfriend, Aidan, already have their lives mapped out: attend Columbia University together, pursue banking careers, and eventually get married. Everything Kaye has accomplished in high school—student government, cheerleading, stellar grades—has been in preparation for that future.

To his entire class, Sawyer is an irreverent bad boy. His antics on the field as school mascot and his love of partying have earned him total slacker status. But while he and Kaye appear to be opposites on every level, fate—and their friends—keep conspiring to throw them together. Perhaps the seniors see the simmering attraction Kaye and Sawyer are unwilling to acknowledge to themselves…

As the year unfolds, Kaye begins to realize her ideal life is not what she thought. And Sawyer decides it’s finally time to let down the facade and show everyone who he really is. Is a relationship between them most likely to succeed—or will it be their favorite mistake?

Review:
It's always sad to see a series end, and I love Jennifer Echols and think she definitely came back with this super cute series about high school and of course superlatives. I don't even think I would have been nominated for any, but if I was I wouldn't mind being nominated for Most Likely to Be Happy. Because really in the end, isn't that something we all strive for, happiness. Sometimes in the case of Kaye, her happiness comes second to all her obligations, and that’s definitely a sad thing.

We are here with Kaye and Sawyer’s story. I’ve been waiting for Sawyer’s story he’s just always there and keeps things interesting, in and out of his Pelican costume. There’s something about him he’s got some confidence to him but still there is something understated about him and I just loved exploring his past his present and his possible future. But what is Sawyer without his Kaye. She’s strong willed and I think wears herself too thin with so many obligations and needs to succeed and please everyone. That’s a lot of pressure to put on a 17 year old, but that’s exactly what her mother does. But something happens when Kaye and her boyfriend break up. This all has to do with the superlatives but she starts seeing Sawyer for something more than just a flirt. She starts to finally take him seriously.

Overall this was a super cute story about two really great people who couldn’t be more different but the same in other ways, and they really do complement one another very well. I love seeing interracial couples in stories, it always seems to be very one note or just all Caucasian. Me being of Hispanic decent, it’s good to see some color in books sometimes. I think authors should do it more often. With that said it was a great little love story, and there were actually some pretty great love scenes in this book, I will never look at the ocean the same again LOL jk, but I won’t. Will keep my mind wandering off now.

The characters were great, I’m really sad to see the series end, but the Superlatives have caused their ruckus and turned six people’s lives upside down in the best way possible. Very cute cover and great story. Make sure you check out the series. Great quick reads that will put a smile on your face.
