Review: Tristan: Finding Hope by Jessica Sorensen

Tristan: Finding Hope
By: Jessica Sorensen
Release Date: June 3, 2014
Series: Nove 3.5

Description:
Tristan has always felt like a ghost. After a painful loss, he became all but invisible to his grieving family. So he dove headfirst into a dangerous life, sinking deeper until he felt he could disappear-and almost did. Though Tristan survived, staying on track is a 24/7 battle he’s not sure he wants to fight.

Then Tristan meets Avery, the girl with purple streaks in her hair and tattoos like secrets, waiting to be uncovered. Her smile is warm and inviting, but her sad, hazel eyes tell a different story. And the strangest part is-she can really see him. A girl like that might just keep Tristan out of the darkness . . . or pull him right back in.

Mini Review:

This book couldn’t have been titled more perfectly, seriously because after finishing reading this novella that’s exactly what I thought of Tristian finally finding some hope after all.  It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Jessica Sorensen and have probably read almost all of her books already, almost I said, but regardless I love all the characters in all the series and this one is no less because Tristan is a lost soul.  He needs help to be found and he may have just found the one person who can make him believe that he is worth something.  Because even though he doesn’t believe it, I know deep down he is, he just needs to throw caution to the wind and play it straight for a while.  Did that make sense?  If you’ve read the series you know what I’m talking about.
We got a small glimpse into his life before all the drama started and he was already running down this road of despair and self-medication, which is never the right answer.  His family doesn’t help much but I know that between Quinton and Nova and this dashing new purple tinted haired beauty they will help Tristen get out of this vicious cycle he’s in.  Oh the hope, oh the wonder, I can’t wait to finally, finally hear his story! This was just a teaser to wet your whistle and now I’m just parched.

Review: Just One Night by Gayle Forman

Just One Night
By Gayle Forman
Release Date: May 29, 2014
Series: Just One Day #2.5

Description:
After spending one life-changing day in Paris with laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter, sheltered American good girl Allyson “Lulu” Healey discovered her new lover had disappeared without a trace. Just One Day followed Allyson’s quest to reunite with Willem; Just One Year chronicled the pair’s year apart from Willem’s perspective. Now, back together at last, this delectable e-novella reveals the couple’s final chapter.

Mini Review:

So this novella was perfect, why you ask, well because I have always wondered what happened next.  Like the story just left you hanging they finally caught up to each other but, what happened next?  Gayle Forman did us a solid when she wrote this novella.  I was giddy with surprise when I started reading it to find out YES! I finally get to see what happens when these two finally meet up after the torturous year they spent looking for one another.

It was sweet and endearing and I was happy to see all the characters back again rehashing what these two have been through and now what they will be going through.  After all, it’s true what they say, if it’s meant to be, it will be and it definitely is.

I love the cover I think it’s beautiful; it’s romantic and just a great picture for a fabulous ending to this amazing series.

“Fans who loved the premise behind Simone Eldele’s Perfect Chemistry will want to give Before You a try. Using alternating points of view, Hart weaves a touching love story sure to capture readers’ hearts. What separates this “boy from the wrong side of the tracks” romance is the inclusion of the hero’s perspective, which will build a deeper connection with readers..” – RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars

“[A] sexy romance…Hart’s writing in this debut conveys a lot of physical and emotional feeling…This riff on West Side Story is torrid and heartfelt.” – Kirkus Reviews

Review:

I haven’t read a book like this in a while, a book that made me feel sentimental on different levels.  There are so many different issues in this book that it just makes you wonder if people are really still like that and unfortunately the answer is yes. Amber Hart really made me think and I really enjoy the experience these two main characters shared together, I will definitely be continuing the series. Especially after reading that sneak peek, has me more intrigued than anything.

We meet Diego who has recently left Cuba to move to Florida and here he meets Faith, who is his peer helper showing him around the school.  From the second they meet there is a physical attraction and throughout their time in school it just seems to grow as they happen to run into one another more often than not, this of course is while Faith still has a boyfriend.  Diego leaves behind in Cuba a life of violence but still hasn’t been able to get over this need to do what he is good at.  This store reads a little west side story (but I love that movie).  There are a lot of cultural differences between the two but they find a happy medium when they are together, they make each other happy and that is what counts.
"He is fluidity in every move.  He is a boy with eyes like hope, with scars that tell stories, with muscle born of a hard life.  It's plain to see, so long as you care to look."

They both struggle to find the freedom they so desire, and with each other they find it slowly.  There are a lot of arguments in this book but it comes with the territory of a. stealing someone’s girlfriend, b. being from a former violent background and c. being the pastor’s daughter throw all those elements together and some really great writing and you have a really amazing book and start to a great series that I can’t wait to continue on.

Amber Hart did a great justice to this freshly made interracial couple that we don’t get to see very often, Latino and white.  The struggles they have to go through to be together, the secrets they hold on each other and society as a whole, and of course the immense passion they have for one another.  This book had a little bit of everything involved and I couldn’t put it down.  Believe me if you enjoy a good young adult/new adult book you will definitely love this book.  There is drama, fighting, romance and an all-encompassing love story.

Review: Where's There's Smoke by Elizabeth Lee

Where There's Smoke
By:
Release Date: May 20, 2014
Series: Jameson Sisters#1

Description:
There is something to be said for letting go. Ryland Roberts knows that better than anyone. He'd let go of his ambitions, of his family and—most of all—of her. He'd perfected the art of putting his past behind him and accepted the fact that the town he wanted to leave in his rearview was the place where he was going to live out his days. But sometimes the past doesn't just go away. Sometimes it comes back to haunt you.

Piper Jameson convinced herself that she left for all the right reasons. She'd saved people by leaving—made sure that they weren't tainted by her rebellious ways. When her little sister asks her to come home and say goodbye to their ailing mother, she's forced to see that things aren't always as they seem. The people who she'd left behind might not have been saved at all.

In the amount of time it takes a bullet to travel from point A to point B, Piper and Ryland will have to put their feelings for each other aside and make a choice. Forced on the run with Piper's sister, they begin to understand that the future they thought was gone was never really lost.

Review:

This was the kind of book I just couldn’t put down. Not only was the story super-hot and sexy but it was original and beyond interesting as well.  This is my first book by Elizabeth Lee but it will definitely not be my last, she had me at the edge of my seat half the time wondering what they were going to do next, what would happen to all of them and most importantly talk about a cri me and a half. There was some serious material in this book, can we say hello Lifetime original movie!

We meet Piper who is on her way back to the hometown she thought she’d never return to, to say her goodbyes to her dying mother.  It was sad and all but I didn’t really feel a connection there, because this story isn’t about her mom dying, nope this is about her rekindling her relationship with her sister and with her ex Ryland.  Let’s not forget more importantly the rocky relationship she has with a stepfather who was nothing more than a controlling (enter bad word).  I don’t think I’ve ever disliked anyone from a book as much as I have disliked this character; Lee did an amazing job of making you feel a certain way towards each character in the book.

There was a lot of turmoil between Piper and Ryland but an undeniable connection that they couldn’t resist any longer.  When the two of them got together, the pages just got steamier and it wasn’t overdone and it wasn’t under done, it was just right, very realistic and possible and I think that’s what I enjoyed the most.  Elizabeth Lee has a way with words and emotions. I was truly addicted to these two. Despite the getting on parts in this book, again there was a crime that happened, and someone had to pay for it, or did they?  I can’t say what it was but it was well deserved and even through all the commotion when the crime was taking place even I felt chaotic reading it.  Who did it?  I had to ask myself that for a bit but I got it in the end, and man was this one a doozy but necessary.

Overall I thought this book was fantastic and I would unquestionably suggest book to anyone who wanted to read something new and refreshing, with a little heat on the side.  I can’t wait to find out what will happen in the next book because the sneak peak was exactly that a teaser that has me wanting more.  I can’t wait to find out what really happened to Hadley (Piper’s sister) and of course how it will turn out in the end.  This is a really great start to an interesting series.  I really like the cover too because it’s simple and I can absolutely picture Piper and Ryland in the cover models.

Review: Make it Count by Megan Erickson

Make it Count
By: Megan Erickson
Release Date: June 3, 2014
Series: Bowler University #1

Description:
Kat Caruso wishes her brain had a return policy, or at least a complaint hot-line. The defective organ is constantly distracted, terrible at statistics, and absolutely flooded with inappropriate thoughts about her boyfriend’s gorgeous best friend, Alec…who just so happens to be her brand new math tutor. Who knew nerd was so hot?

Kat usually goes through tutors like she does boyfriends—both always seem to bail when they realize how hopeless she is. It’s safer for her heart to keep everyone at arm’s reach. But Alec is always stepping just a little too close.

Alec Stone should not be fantasizing about Kat. She’s adorable, unbelievably witty, and completely off limits. He’d never stab his best friend in the back…

But when secrets are revealed, the lines of loyalty are blurred. To make it count, Alec must learn messy human emotions can’t be solved like a trigonometry function. And Kat has to trust Alec may be the first guy to want her for who she is, and not in spite of it.

Review:
This was a very quick fun and easy read that touched upon a subject that’s not discussed that much but is just as important as any other issue.  That is, dyslexia a learning disability that if gone untreated simply frustrates the person who has it making them feel less than others and just adding more issues on top of this.  I am really glad that this book explored that and the feelings behind having dyslexia.  Making it Count really is a finding yourself book that makes you feel good in the end.

The main character in this book is Kat, a Brazilian girl who is struggling in her classes and wanting to do better request a tutor, who turns out to be her current boyfriend’s best friend.  Can we say hello trouble? This best friend, Alec starts treating Kat better than his best friend Max who has been very off lately.  Regardless of this Kat is hard pressed to be faithful and to finally learn something about statistics, the class he’s tutoring her in.

Now there is a lot that happens but I don’t want to give it away.  Just know there are some great secondary characters in this book and two of them will be the focus of the next book, but the main characters are hard headed as they were they really made this book entertaining.  Kat is very out there and spacey but in a good way, you can’t help but like her and well Alec being the nerd he is I can totally picture him being one of those sexy nerds.  I know you know what I mean, the kind that are amazing kissers, the kind that make your knees shake with how cute and nerdy they are.

The cover is very cute and innocent and even thought it was an easy breezy great summer kind of read (especially before school starts), there were serious issues in this book and of course lots of good loving, just an overall great book.  I can’t wait to read the next book because I really want to know what exactly the back story on the two characters is.  You definitely should read this it’s a great addition to the new adult book world and I’m so happy I picked it up.  Very flowy and just a good read.

Review: Nova and Quinton: No Regrets by Jessica Sorensen

Nova and Quinton: No Regrets
By: Jessica Sorensen
Release Date: April 15, 2014
Series: Nova #3

Description:
Today is the first day of Quinton Carter's new life. The toxic guilt of his past left him in pieces-but one girl unexpectedly put him back together. Thanks to Nova Reed, Quinton can finally see the world with clear eyes. She's the reason his heart is still kicking behind the jagged scar on his chest. And he would love to have her in his arms every minute of the day . . . but he's not ready yet.

Playing drums in a band and living with her best friends are just some of the highlights of Nova's life. But the best new development? Talking to Quinton on the phone each night. She wishes she could touch him, kiss him, though she knows he needs time to heal. Yet shocking news is on the way-a reminder of life's dark side-and Nova will need Quinton like he once needed her. Is he strong enough to take the final leap out of his broken past . . . and into Nova's heart?

Review:

Jessica Sorensen always knows just how to capture the angst and problems that happen throughout young adults and people alike, this continuation of Nova and Quinton’s story, or should I say finalization of their story is quite endearing, sweet and thought provoking just like the previous two in this series.

We are back with Quinton who is finally getting out of rehab and trying to put his life back together and Nova is trying to get on with hers but she can’t help the fact that she misses Quinton.  These two both needed saving at different times but with each other’s help and strength they were able to give that to one another.  Even though Quinton doesn’t believe he deserves someone as good as Nova they belong together and it’s evident with all the text messages they share together.

There is something special about true love that will get you each time and these two definitely shared that strong connection, maybe it was the events in their lives but whatever it is it made them stronger, together.  I do however feel bad for Tristen because he’s just in the background feeling as worthless as ever, that’s why I can’t wait to read the next book which is all about him. He’s a lost soul that also needs some saving, but not even the ever savior complex of Nova can save him, he needs something more.

It was good to see these characters grow into a better life for one another and I can’t wait to catch glimpses of them in the next book.  They now both have a purpose and a meaning and a strong relationship to look forward to.  I believe Jessica Sorensen has a way of not glamorizing the nitty gritty parts of life but showing how you can overcome your past demons.  I have loved all her stories and this series is no less than the others.  Drugs are a hard thing to get over, but when you do there really is a brighter side around the corner.

The cover was great.  The story was amazing and really came full circle.  This is another must read series by this author.  She should really get into some TV series, maybe bring all the characters together, and talk about some major drama!

He’s met girls like her before—fixers, he calls them, desperate to heal the damage and make him into their ideal boyfriend. But he doesn’t think he’s broken, and he definitely doesn’t need a girlfriend trying to change him. Review: Wild Things By Chloe Neill

Wild Things
By: Chloe Neill
Release Date: February 4, 2014
Series: Chicagoland Vampires #9

Description:
Since Merit was turned into a vampire, and the protector of Chicago’s Cadogan House, it’s been a wild ride. She and Master vampire Ethan Sullivan have helped make Cadogan’s vampires the strongest in North America, and forged ties with paranormal folk of all breeds and creeds, living or dead…or both.

But now those alliances are about to be tested. A strange and twisted magic has ripped through the North American Central Pack, and Merit’s closest friends are caught in the crosshairs. Gabriel Keene, the Pack Apex, looks to Merit and Ethan for help. But who—or what—could possibly be powerful enough to out-magic a shifter?

Merit is about to go toe to toe, and cold steel to cold heart, to find out.

Review:

I've missed Merit and Ethan, the two of them is hypnotizing or is it glamorizing?  Either way, I have missed them and their adventures because let's face it there always seems to be trouble following them and Wild Things is no exception.  Chloe Neill has yet again sucked me into this Chicago world of Sups and Magic and has left me wanting more.

Too much has gone on in this book with a new mystery, old characters resurfacing and great characters still being their funny selves and let us not forget all the new characters that have been introduced in this book.  While trying to escape a lunatic mayor who is out to get Ethan, they run to the Shifters and there a new magic has been brought to light.  This new mysterious magic is only the tip of the iceberg as there are so many things going on that this experience brings them to new knowledge that this may have been going on for longer than they realized.  It’s all very interesting, and hey carnies are involved, are they sups too?  Only reading the book will help you to find out.

In other news though, the friendships of all the characters are stronger than ever, alliances are stronger than ever and the relationship between Merit and Ethan is just unbreakable.  She finally comes clean about her prophecies (if you’ve read the other books you know what I’m talking about) and just the interaction between the two when this happens is just amazing and heartwarming.  I love seeing characters in love and when they experience joy I feel joy for them, and there was something there that made me feel extra special joy.  That was a really great scene in the book that’s for sure.

So the carnival and the mayor are the major issues in this book and the whole carnival aspect was super intriguing so it’s definitely a must read.  And another mayor with a hard on for destroying sups, enough is enough already can’t we all just get along.  This was another great addition to the series and keeps it continuously going on with an additional mystery thrown in.  Chloe has a way with keeping us at the edge of our seat wondering what is going to happen next, which is going to creep around the corner and try and attack you.  This would be a great series on television.

The cover is wonderful, although I wouldn’t have minded a carnie cover that might have been fun as that was the focus in this book amongst other things.  This was another great addition to the book and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Review: On the Fence by Kasie West

On the Fence
By: Kasie West
Release Date: July 1, 2014

Description:
Charlie Reynolds can outrun, outscore, and outwit every boy she knows. But when it comes to being a girl, Charlie doesn't know the first thing about anything. So when she starts working at a chichi boutique to pay off a speeding ticket, she finds herself in a strange new world. To cope with the stress of her new reality, Charlie takes to spending nights chatting with her neighbor Braden through the fence between their yards. As she grows to depend on their nightly Fence Chats, she realizes she's got a bigger problem than speeding tickets-she's falling for Braden. She knows what it means to go for the win, but if spilling her secret means losing him for good, the stakes just got too high.

Fun, original, and endearing, On the Fence is a romantic comedy about finding yourself and finding love where you least expect.

Review:

This was a super fun, quick, happy read that is perfect for the summer and some good hearted light reading.  The author did a really great job of depicting the struggle of the main character to become her own person while being surrounded by men and just beginning to learn what it’s like to be a woman.  It’s very much a coming of age story and it was a great story at that.  I wish I had a neighbor like Braden, that’s all I’m saying!

We meet Charlie who is constantly surrounded by her three brothers and her neighbor, oh and her cop father too.  She doesn’t have much interaction with girls, so when she ends up having to gt a job and working at a clothing store she starts to realize maybe she was missing some things in her life, which makes her start to think of her mother that much more.  It’s that motherly advice that Charlie needs when she starts feeling things for the Braden, even the slightest touch and her stomach is turned upside down.  There were definitely a lot of swoon worthy parts in this book and parts that made you take that deep sigh and just dream about having your own hot neighbor.  Anyway it was just all so well written and represented all the girl things you have to go through while growing up and how hard it is to actually find yourself, the real you without being influenced by everyone around you.

Overall this story was amazing, it had too many good parts to mention and I’m so happy I picked it up.  The cover is absolutely as adorable as the book and the characters.  Even the father holds a small piece of me now; I’m telling you I want to be an honorary member of this family.  It’s good to do things together, and even though ti’s good to protect people from getting hurt you just can’t protect them from everything.  Sometimes you have to put it all out there so that you can learn from your past.

I loved everything about this book, the characters, the setting, the romance, and especially the story itself.  Really great job of making me smile and giddy like a school girl again.  This is a perfect read to feel a little a pitter patter in your heart for young love.
